First off decide if you would like your hair to be long or short. Take note that most emo girls either have medium length hair or short hair above the shoulders.
Next choose a new hair color; drastic change is best when it comes to emo styles so pick something that is a contrast to your current color and hairstyle. Visit your local beauty store and pick up a drastically different color. Black and blond mixed are favorites of emo girls. Pink, blue and green streaks are also effective.
Either dye all your hair, add highlights, or a splotch of color to a certain section of your head or go for all three. To create a contrasting variation add color to the front of the head as this is protocol for emo and scene kids. Black hair and blond bangs or vice versa is a popular choice for emo girls.
Part your hair on the side just beyond the eyebrow and swoop the bangs over one eye to create the signature emo look. The point of looking emo is to look depressed and sad so bangs add a bit of drama to an otherwise normal looking hairstyle. Layer your hair to create a real emo style; longer in the back and shorter in the front or longer in the front and short in the back are typical layering

For girls, scene hair is very, very choppy, usually dyed black with one or two thick random blonde chunks. It’s perfectly straight all the time, with bangs that cover one or both eyes. VERY, VERY volumous, with a lot of product used, such as certain shampoos, hair wax, mousses, and sprays. Cute little plastic hairclips, bows, or headbands with polkadots are worn in the hair(and usually don’t serve any purpose besides being cute.)
For boys, scene hair is about 2.5 to 3 inches long in the back, and about chin-length in the front. It is usually dyed black with a chunk of blonde or kool-aid red, with the bangs hanging in front of the eyes. The back is spiked up, while the bangs are perfectly straight. Fauxhawks are also considered scene for both boys and girls alike. bandannas can be worn around the head as well, not serving any purpose besides the certain “look” it creates.
Girls;
- block fringe covering the eyes/just above the eyes OR can be tied to the side
- if tied to the side, it has to be tied using cute clips and hair grips.
- added volume & spiked/lifted up in the back using lots of hairspray.
- leopard/camo/polka dot headband worn mostly when the fringe is down.
- bows&ribbons worn in hair.
- usually jet black/white blonde, sometimes with one bright colour streak.
- (black/blonde/colour) extensions are NEEDED.!
Guys;
- block fringe / long or short side fringe, sometimes covering the eyes (the same as girls’).
- hairspray is used to give volume to the hair/spike it up at the back.
- ALWAYS layered at the sides of the face and at the back, sometimes on the fringe (unless it’s a proper block fringe).
- usually jet black / white blonde, with streak(s) of the opposite colour at the side/fringe.
- sometimes a shoulder length tip on the side of the fringe (right by the face) and the rest of the hair cut shorter.
- bows are sometimes worn.
- bandana (red/black/white) is worn as a headband.

Note: This video was made in 2007, my style has changed greatly since then. Also, I didn’t use a teasing comb because I couldn’t find it. Don’t use a hair brush. Use a teasing comb. You’ll get better results. And I don’t really like wearing heavy makeup, so that’s why it’s not super intensely dark and gross. This is my version of scene way back in high school, a look I could wear for every day.
Disclaimer: scene is a way of life, not about how you look. Some people look at me and say “that girl is a poser” but if they really knew me and knew how many shows I’ve been to and how many people I’ve met they would reconsider. Besides, it’s not about the way you look or how you dress that makes you scene, it’s about the music scene.

R/o for info! First hair tutorial! easy way to add a little color to your do’
SEWING the clips on is the ultimate secure way and what I’d recommend most.
Remember to use weave thread, it’s thicker than househould thread. I just went with glue for time sake.
Also, you don’t have to color the extensions some crazy color. This is the same method for just adding clip ins to your own hair to add length or volume, in which case you’d want to match your own color or dye it the same
